Giving GHDed straightened hair a bit of volume/root lift

I straighten my hair with GHDs, as I'm getting older (43) its getting not quite so thick (was super thick all my life), how do I keep that volume & root lift and stop it looking flat - especially the second day?
I use Pantene coloured & volume shampoo & thats it, I don't use any styling products. Serums I think can make it go greasy quicker & they don't help with root lift anyway.
Mousse is the obvious answer but not with GHDs.
Any ideas?

Can you avoid straightening the very roots or are they wavy/curly?
You can get mattifying styling dust that's great for giving volume - you just sprinkle a bit on and rub it in for instant volume. VO5, TreSemme and others make it. The main downside is that it will leave your hair really sticky.
Batiste now has an "XXL" dry shampoo that I swear has some of the mattifying dust in it as it definitely gives volume. It will make your hair slightly sticky but not as bad as the dust. It's also good for second-day hair.
I would post links but my internet is being really slow so Boots won't load. :mad:0 -

I tried not straightening too near the roots, but it just looked half done.
I like Batiste, but my hair is chestnut brown with honey & ash highlights & regular Batiste looks white, the brown one is great thought.
I will look on Boots website.
Never heard of mattifying dust, I will look for that too.
ETA no Batiste XXL (or brown) on boots

I suffer the same problem but I think the thickness of my hair is suffering because of the GHD usage and not the other way around.
I'm not that much younger than you but given how long GHD's have been on the market we've probably been using them for the same amount of time.
I'm not a hairdresser but my sister is and that's what she thinks the problem is. GHD's have such high temperatures and no matter how carefully you use them there's gonna be breakages. That i think is what affects hair thickness.
In saying that there is another product, is heat based again though, by remington i think. It's a small crimper for root lift. I can't do links nor have i used it but this might work?
Out of interest does any one else have the same problem with GHD's?0 -

Hi, Yes I'm having the same problems with my GHD's. I am also in my early 40's and have been using them for quite a long time.
For the last few weeks, I've hardly used them. I had my hair trimmed last week and my hair looks and feels better already.
