New job but no start time?

What harm can turning up do? QUOTE]
Aside from looking silly and potentially causing a whole heap of work? Who honestly turns up to a job without a contract or confirmation that they can start? If I were someone's manager and they turned up out of the blue, not only would I think this somewhat strange but I'd also panic a bit about not having got anything prepared and would then spend most of my day away from my own work trying to sort it all out. Not the best way to start off with an organisation, obviously in my opinion.

The email said they wanted her to start, the agency have cocked up, it would be sillier not to turn up and the company decide she is unreliable so withdraw the offer? She is 10 mins away of it's a massive issue she can always go home, no0one will die, no wonder there are so many people struggling to get a job if everyone is scared of "looking silly" OP go for it!

  • My thoughts exactly nearlyrich! I'd rather turn up and be sent home, than not to turn up and look unreliable, especially when I was told the other candidate was a very close second.
Smileylondongal, with all due respect, I left a job to get away from those kinds of attitudes, I did have an email that was originally sent to the agency confirming that "ideally they wanted me to start on Monday"

I emailed the guy who's going to be my boss in my new company, and it appears he's also been left high and dry by the agency, and doesn't know what's going on. He's said that considering the contract hasn't been sent to me he doesn't see the point in me coming in tomorrow.

So it seems everything relating to me starting is with the agency.

Let us know what happens OP
  • Well the agency just phoned apologising for not getting in touch before now, and asked if I can make it into my new place this morning, at least my new boss knows the situation and it's not just a case of me not turning up on time for my first day

OP, I really don't know what 'attitudes' you're talking about! I was only telling you the issue from a manager's point of view. I was thinking it would be silly of any new company not to take into account the agency's lack of communication to you and that you should email both to make sure they knew you were devoid of blame.

In the end, it seems like your manager agreed - after all he also said that there was no point starting without a contract. I am confuddled by your response, but I am glad things have been resolved for you and that everyone now knows what's going on.
