Ba shares?

Anecdotal, but BA are hiring like a proverbial child without a father at the moment.
The military are really suffering, and BA arent offering the cushtie salary/pension package the boomers got. Having said that, most mil pilots retire with a 10K annual pension at the age of 38, so mustnt moan (no indexing till 55, then you get all indexing from 38).
Is the indistry picking up? You need to remember, a lot of trade is global, and BA do the lions share from the far east/middle east to london and back again (Virgin do a fair whack too). They are expanding the fleet and will cut costs with upgrades in equipment, engines and other technology (winglets save 2% burn, the 787 will save around 7% on current burns) so there are savings to be made. The Iberia deal means a further deal with another carrier unlikely.
You are right though, its an unstable world and one I wouldnt enter into without the fallback of a living wage pension. Having said that, 90K tax free starting with emirates with captaincy in 6 years (120k+) is pretty bl00dy tempting. Good job I worked hard at school. Not bad for a job that gives you free business class tickets globally, where you get paid to sleep on the job.
The greek chap who runs easy allegedly once said: "If you want to make a small fortune in aviation, I suggest you invest a large one". Says it all really...0 -
Airlines have historically never been a great investment
AIUI, the airline industry taken as a whole from start to now has lost money....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I know takeovers have been shown to destroy shareholder value. Is the same true of mergers. Obviously in an industry still made up of 'national champions' there may remain scope for further economies of scale. I know someone who works in the iag cargo areana and they are definitely benefitting from network efficiencies in what is one of the most integrated part of the organisation at present.
Yes and for the same reasons: they tend to be pursued to maximise the earnings of management rather than returns to shareholders.neverdespairgirl wrote: »AIUI, the airline industry taken as a whole from start to now has lost money.
That's what they say. This has figures since the end of WW2 and I think that it has been profitable in that period from the graphs. Having said that, the figures won't include indirect subsidies to airline companies such as planes being provided below cost (Airbus and Concorde for example) and airports ditto. Also capital being provided cheaply and friendly tax regimes being put in place.
My suspicion is that if you include all that then the losses are awesome.0 -
