Extending pocketses

Options
DS3 has been given a very nice pair of jeans for Christmas, which I've washed and he's worn (so no, I can't take them back!) However, he says the pockets aren't very deep, and I have to agree with him because I noticed it when I checked them for washing.

I know you USED to be able to buy 'new' pockets to fit into old trousers (in the good old days of make do and mend!) and I have done this in the past. But I seem to remember it was slightly counter-intuitive. And I haven't been able to find any in the shops now.

So before I go and get into a right state trying to work out how to extend his pocketses, can anyone either give me some advice or point me to a site with diagrams? I've got some suitable material, fortunately ... and a decent sewing machine.

Thanks in advance and sorry if the info is already on the forum somewhere, but searching for pockets and mend throws up rather a lot of posts!

They sell them on our local market, on the old fashioned harberdashery stall.

If you want to make some I suggest you get a pair of jeans/ trousers with a suitable size of pocket, pull the pocket out and draw around it then cut the material to the pattern.

Cut the old pockets across and then attach the extensions. Hope that makes sense!

Much to my surprise, I found a pair of 'spare' pockets in my sewing box.

And I did my best to add an extension, starting with the left pocket, because DS said he would use the rh pocket more.

I had to narrow the 'new' pocket because it was too wide for the 'old' pocket. And I got DS to try it before starting to hack the other pocket about.

Guess what? The new pocket is too narrow to be comfy / useful.

So I've left the rh pocket alone.

I guess these were designed as posing pockets (fingers in, thumbs in belt loops) rather than as useful pockets (carrying Ipod, keys, phone ...)

Fiddly job and not very satisfactory result. Grrrr.

Off now to sew labels in his new school shirts. A mother's work is never done ...
