I remember decades ago my mum having a fur coat, but if I remember rightly it got rained on when she was out one time and the coat was ruined(??) So maybe fur coats aren't as weather-proof as you might think.
I gave up even wearing imitation fur back in the late 90s, because I'd get people making comments, thinking it was real fur!
I don't know how acceptable it is to wear fur these days. I think a lot of celebs do wear it. I guess if it's a by-product of an animal that's being killed anyway, and it's a very cold climate then yes, why not. I'm not sure about using it just for fashion, though. That could be seen as tasteless.0 -
i got a vintage arctic fox fur collar off freecycle last year and intend to wear it this winter. it was her great grandmas and has been dead an awfully long time'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

At the end of the day, it's best to decide what kind of person you are.
If what is putting you off wearing the coat is other people's opinions, then if you hang out with people (in real life and on the internet) who don't care, then you'll be fine.
But what is putting you off wearing it is causing the death of an animal, then you could consider only buying vintage furs (like ivory, the old stuff is legal on the grounds that well, they're dead already anyhow).
If wearing it causes you images of blood and gore and loss of life, then it's a bit more difficult. You then get into the game of balancing it with justifying how warm it is, how lots of others are doing it, etc.
Does this help a bit?0 -
I dont believe killing any animal is humane whether is be for food, leather or fur but I eat meat, have leather boots so wont pass judgement on anyone who wears a fur coat. I too have been looking at vintage pelts after last winter.
A lot of the paint throwing antics of the 90's (i believe) was a trend, many of whom probably couldn't tell real from fake or their !!!! from their elbow.
I do believe in animal rights to a point but unless the whole world is going to turn vegetarian, wear fake leather, vegan shoes and ethically source everything from a can of cat food to a French bean, it just isnt going to happen.Little Person Number 4 Due March 2012

I'm torn, I work with Swedes and Germans and in the snow last (this!) year they always turned up at the offics in their furs looking like they had been for a stroll where as I was pink, weather beaten and a freezing mess!
In London they had got to the stage where everyone thinks they are fake anyway........ how it is elsewhere I dont know.
I do remeember years ago (20ish) having a fox fur coat that when asked by a 'friend' what poor animal had to die so i could wear it, I replied "my Gran!"I wish I would take my own advice!0 -
I dont eat animals and am opposed to hunting as sport. However I think of vintage furs are an exception similar to exquisite ivory carvings from 19th century. Those elephant, foxes and mink died in a less enlightened time and I think it honours them if we use and appreciate the end result of their sacrifice. It wont help them if we burn fur coats or ivory ornaments now will it? I am glad there are no fur farms here any more but our native wildlife has been slaughtered to the brink of extinction by mink released from farms in the past that have bred so successfully and are now a menace to fish, water birds and small mammals along our rivers. Thought before action would have prevented this tragic consequence.
I too have my granny's mink coat. (There's posh!) It doesnt fit me and I wish I knew where to sell it. I could do with the dosh and someone would love it I'm sure.0 -
I had a vintage fur coat that belonged to my grandma - I felt too OTT wearing it so I sold it on Ebay.
Vintage fur doesn't bother me (don't know why as practices were probably just as cruel) but I just think as well that for the cost there are much better faux furs out there. Though like anything you'll get people who are even against faux fur as it glamourises real fur. Some people just don't have enough real stuff to worry about!0
