Eye tests in supermarkets/boots etc

Is there any difference between eye tests given by a doctor and those given by retail outlets?

My husband - who has been wearing glasses for the last 5 years - feels his failing eye sight could be improved with laser surgery, apart from getting a test and prescription from Boots, for example, I'm sceptical that are they the right people to advise on this sort of stuff?

Any experiences?

What do you mean an eye test given by a doctor?

All opticians whether in a supermarket or a specialised opticians shop will be well trained and suitably qualified (I believe they have to have a degree and at least a year in training before they are registered).

Is your worry that they will tell you that you need glasses just to make money off you? I wouldn't worry about that. If they give you a prescription you can take it anywhere, you don't have to use it in their shop.

as said above they all have to be fully qualified, all you may find is that the supermarket opticians have a 10min testing slot and a private practice will allow for 20-30 mins (does that mean a more thorough test or an optician that chats more ;))

If he is interested in Laser surgery he should visit somewhere such as optical express who can check for suitability.
