I lost my wallet some time ago and resigned myself to never seeing it again, or at least seeing it but empty! Two nights later a friend text me to say my wallet was at a local hotel... she'd seen a status on facebook asking if anyone knew a <my name> and to tell them their wallet was at a local hotel! Imagine my surprise when I turned up and it had been picked up by a member of staff on their way to work, and handed back to me complete with notes!
My own time to feel warm inside was chatting to a homeless fella whilst waiting for a taxi on a night out. I bought a big issue and gave him a bit extra and had a chat with him about why he was on streets, where he was sleeping etc, he wasn't a drinker and had ended up on street after a breakdown of his relationship and having nowhere else to go. Just as I got into the taxi he stopped and said "thanks, you making the time to stop and chat means more than anything i'll make off this magazine". Made me feel good about myself. I now always make time for homeless people.0 -

This is a lovely thread!
When I was much, much younger a very intense relationship I was in broke up (OH went off with someone else). We were sharing a house with a bunch of other people and it was just a horrible situation. Well, one afternoon I emptied all the snotty, tear-filled tissues out of my bin and spelled the words, "You B*****d" on OH's bedroom carpet (:rotfl:) and then walked to a friend's house. I got halfway there and had a panic attack, so flagged a black cab down and asked him to take me as far as he could with the money I had on me (I didn't have enough to get all the way home), as I wanted to clear up the tissues. I was hysterical as only a teenager can be and told him what had happened. Bless him, he refused to take any money for the fare because I was so obviously distressed. I can look back at it now and laugh, but at the time that taxi driver's kindness was a balm in what felt like the end of the world.
I also had another kind taxi driver who refused to take full fare on the day he picked me up to take me to the vet's with my pet rat, who was dying and did actually die on the way. I was in floods of tears. The poor guy didn't know what to do with this woman in the back of his cab, who was weeping copiously all over the dead rat in her arms :rotfl:When we got to the vet's he opened the cab door for me and patted me awkwardly on my shoulder, bless him.
Taxi drivers. They must see all of life and more in the back of their cabs!Aspire not to have more but to be more.

A common theme that seems to be developing in this thread is the kindness of taxi drivers, not only are they an endless source of helpful opinions but when people are in need they seem to be happy to go out of their way to help.
A very big :T for taxi drivers."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
Mine's kind and somewhat amusing! Many years ago, in my teens, I worked in Winchester and lived maybe five or six bus stops away. Having absolutely no self confidence, in all the time I lived and worked there, I never caught a bus (except maybe with friends) as I didn't know where to ask for. One day I was driving home and my boss's car stopped just ahead of me, I recognized his bald head, so I just got in the back seat and shut the door. Then the driver turned around - I'd never seen him or his wife in the passenger seat in my life! They had stopped to ask directions but then very kindly took me home. Needless to say, I was always extremely careful after that - I mean, anything could have happened to a 16 year old girl.Ooh, I've gotta little star! What's that for then?!!0

Loving this thread.
A few years back (near christmas) I was traveling back from work on the local bus, and we stoped outside a supermarket. A little old lady was strugling to get her shopping on, soo I helped get her shopping on and off again, and wished her a Merry Christmas. A little while later I was getting some lunch from a burger van on the market, and I give him £5 (It came to £3 I think), and said to keep the change and wished him Merry Christmas (I was full of Christmas Sprit that day).0 -
When our son was at college, he had about a 10 mile bus journey daily. One day, he had a driving lesson booked for when he got home. But he was tired and fell asleep on the bus on the way home. When he woke up, he had gone past our town, and was in another town 10 or more miles in the opposite direction! His mobile phone was out of credit, and he didn't have any money to phone home.
He was near a supermarket, so decided to ask some people if they could give him 10p for the phone. However, the couple he approached, although they lived some distance from our town, not only gave him the money to phone, but also drove him all the way home, too! He got home just a short time after the driving instructor arrived. Amazingly, the couple who had given DS the lift were friends of his driving instructor, and had a chat with him while our son got ready for his lesson!
We found a mobile phone in our front garden once, we guessed it was dropped by a child from the nearby secondary school. We called the home number, and the mum was very grateful - said the child had been worried & didn't know what had happened to it, he came and picked it up straight away.
I have often been grateful to people who have passed on their car park tickets with time still on them, especially in hospital car parks, and usually try to pass ours on to other people if there is plenty of time left - paying to park at hospitals is a nuisance at best, isn't it?0 -
I sold my flat some years ago to move into the home of the person who is now my wife. The person buying it wanted me to include the curtains and carpets (no problem as they were fitted for that place), but also include the washing machine, cooker and bed. I was happy to to.
There wasn't a great deal more stuff really, but I reckoned the buyer could use the the fridge/freezer, dining table and chairs + 2 fireside chairs, sofa, plus a microwave. Saved me getting shot of them and I needed none of these things were I was moving to.
Anyway a letter somehow found it's way to me thanking me for leaving the stuff, as it gave her a start. She knew I hadn't moved far and hoped we would meet! Red carnation and all! Well I'd just got married, hadn't I! But it was a, nice (hopeful) thought on her behalf I think.0 -

My husband was working in Nigeria and he had to have a driver. The driver had 2 small children but couldn't afford to send them to school, so my OH paid for them to go to school. It was only about £30 for the 2 of them for the year. OH says he was really grateful. Couldn't thank him enough. He took my OH to his home, which was a tin shack in a shanty town. He says the children were all excited about going to school. He took OH to the pub, which was another shack. They offered him supper. OH even got invited to a wedding! He says they didn't have much but they would have given him their last.0
