If i had outstanding debt of 28k there is no way i'd be thinking if borrowing another 17k for a second hand car ! Doesn't matter how big my salary was. There are lots of reliable cars (some brand new ones !) for a lot less than 17k.

The HSBC loan is currently 28k and I want to borrow 17k so HSBC aren't interested.

My car is worth that and its three years old
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Wow, talk about fritter your money away on junk and worthless tin cans.

That level of debt would terrify me unless I was Alan Suagr or on The Dragons Den......

I appreciate what you guys are saying but I'm not asking whether you could afford it or whether you think I can afford it - I've done that bit and it's fine. I'm trying to source a way of saving a few quid at the end of the loan and I guess I won't find that information here.

My previous "fritterings" are full of happy tenants so I'm more than happy to fritter a bit more on something for me this time.

    Thanks for the replies anyhow.

Have you considered releasing some equity...assuming of course you have some? If your unsecured borrowings are so high it may be the only way?

There's equity but I want to keep it to make life easier for when I come to buying a house nearer to my new job.

Ironically, then I won't need a new car!

If HSBC are your bank and they've run away on fire screaming, the chances of it happening are slim to none anyway.
