    It might simply be interest and charges.

    If the ex won't / can't deal with her responsibilities soon, I think your husband is going to have to make a decision.

    - Pay it up in full, get the account closed and stop the matter escalating.
    - Make an offer to the bank in full and final settlement (perhaps for a small percentage of the balance due).
    - Refuse to pay and accept the likely trashing of his (and possibly your) credit file, the possibility of a charging order on his home if he is a property owner.

    It's bound to be going up (considerably), sounds like nobody is throwing any money at it.

    The assumption the ex has found a way to borrow against it may not be the case.
