Selling my photo's

I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I live in Suffolk and have only just started out (as a hobby) taking photographs of racehorses. I would really appreciate it if anyone could pass on some of their knowledge of the business, I know this is cheeky, but I'm a total novice at some of this and was hoping they'd be able to help.

What it is I'm after is pricing structures. At the moment, I upload my photo's to a social network (with a watermark) for the work riders (morning exercise) so that they can see their riding positions etc and sometimes I get a request for a print out of a certain photo.

My prices are:-

6" x 4"/4.5"...£3ea
7" x 5" ....£5ea
6"x8"...£8ea
8"x10"...£10ea
A4...£12ea
A4 Premium Paper...£15ea

I don't charge for my time as like I mentioned this is just a hobby at the moment.

Only thing is, I've been approached by a couple of the stables and been asked to put a few of the photo's on a cd for them. This set of stables say that they purely want these digital copies for themselves and ensured me that they do not want to use them for any publication or media usage or for web use.

Also another stables would like to use one of my photo's for their website.

I was wondering if someone could suggest some sort of pricing system for these.

Also how would I go about telling these clients regarding copyrights on my photo's and that they are not able to alter or resell my photo's without my knowledge or
consent.

Thank you all in advance

Sarah

You would want to give the clients a license for the photos and retain the copyright yourself. Depending on what their wanting to use them for would dictate your price and wording of the license.

In general have a look at http://home.the-aop.org as they have some good information but explicitly on licensing see http://www.thephotographybiz.com/photography-business/copyright-for-photographers/what-exactly-is-a-photography-license/ which has a link to a license from the AOP part the way down the page.

Pricing will depend on if you are looking to do work for commission (eg the stables or just trying to sell the print to one person) or if your doing photos which you effectively then want to mass market.

With the former you can charge either for the time it takes + expenses and they get all of the results. Alternatively you can do the shoot for free but then charge per image that they decide to use. If you look at Getty Images and one of their Rights Managed images you will get a series of questions asked which then gives you a price. These will be too high for you but it will give an idea of how the big boys charge - for example a medium sized picture for a UK based website to be displayed on a secondary page for 1 year is £300.

I think you need to get a secure license.
MAyBe if you want to sell then go to an auction.
  • For the best of your photos, you could always get a canvas print and hawk it around places like B&Q, Homebase and Ikea and see if they're interested in using it for their stores...go national or independent galleries. Horses are always popular, for things like birthday cards and prints, so websites like Zazzle and Redbubble are useful but only get commission but you retain the copyright, I have a link on my homepage if you're interested in that avenue.
Also when you upload to social media like F@cebook or Flickr, only post a low resolution photo...people steal stuff, even with watermarks. If it's only small res. when they enlarge it it's all pixelated.

    Hi,

Just as an aside, have you thought of putting some of your photos on sites like istockphoto?
You wouldn't earn that much, but every bit helps.

If you want to try suplying stock then I suggest looking into other options as well as istockphoto. There are lots of libraries that will get you far more than istockphoto for a sale and will return a higher percentage of the fee to you.

A good plce to start is on the BAPLA site where all the BAPLA registered libraries are listed. If you have some good horse pictures look first to see if you can get represented by a library that specialises in horses/animals, failing that a good general library. Look at what price they sell pictures for, look in magazines and books to see if they are selling many, look at what percentage of the sale you will get.

In my opinion istockphoto may well suit someone who can produce a lot of saleable comercial pictures but most photographers will be better off elsewhere.

There is a long thread about selling pictures which is well worth a look at
