I have always recycled the contents, sealed the empty envelope and sent it back to them with a comment on the back telling them to not do it again.

I was told by someone that used to work in Marketing that apparently it will cost the company more to receive the envelope back, something like 10p each time.

Eventually, they get the message and stop.

No please don't do this, I used to work on an opening centre for a catalogue company who sent out promotional offers to those who had agreed to recieve such items when i was 18. I gave it up after seeing and experiencing some horrific things, pins, glass, poo, dead animals, abuse (rape/murder/arson), and when someone got pricked by an apparently used syringe I left.

Please think about the person sat on opening on minimum wage, also it is an offence to send such things through the post. People who did what you suggest used to make my life a misery. :(

I kept getting life insurance offers from Norwich Union, so I wrote on the form "remove me from your database" in big letters and sent it back in their pre-paid envelope

When I used to pay credit card bills by cheque I never put a stamp on the envelope. Never got billed for it and don't know (or care - they make enough) if the cc company did. I would imagine it would work for catalogues etc.

Surely sending an empty envelope back doesn't equate to the horrible things you say you found or did I miss something?

Prepaid envelopes have account details on them for the company they came from. Also it's usually prepaid 2nd class, and as long as whatever you put in there is 2nd class you'll be able to use them no problem.

If the contents isn't covered by 2nd class royal mail will
    a) call the company lthe envelope belongs to and ask them to pay the difference
    b) return the post to them
    c) ask the recipient to pay the difference.

I my experience a & b are the most common.

if your happy to take the risk of return, it does work, but as a previous post said it is also illegal.
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

My post was in repsonse to one that someone definately posted, I can only think that as it had criminal suggestions on it, the guides have deleted it. It basically said 'if they send you their s*** you send them yours or that of your dog...'
  • I was told years ago that it was legal to put a sticker over the address, so long as you didn't cover up the bit with the business reply number - so the company could be charged for the postage. I've been using them for years for unimportant stuff 9that I don't really care if it goes astray)

Why is it illegal? Which law does it actualy break?

Many envelopes now have a barcode under the 1st or 2nd bit in the top left hand corner. Does anyone know if this is a short cut barcode with the company's addresss? Or a barcode so the company gets charged for the letter?
