Sending letters/Photos to magazines

My Nan buys those weekly magazines such as Chat, That's Life etc and this time last year I wondered if I could make some extra money so I found cute photos of my daft cat and took a photo of a heart shapped conker I found for them to feature in their letters/photos pages.

Most pay about £25 per photo or letter and I ended up making £75 through my cat and £25 for the conker photo. I have some Christmas photos that I will send off soon to be featured in their Christmas issues.

It can take a while for the money to come through and the photo to be featured but is a nice surprise to have a cheque come through the door.

Thanks for the tip! My friend did this once and made a bit of cash too. Can you send the same photo to more than one mag?
  • This is a good idea - my dog is always doing stupid things!!

I would also like to know the answer asked by the previous poster - can you send the pic to more than one magazine?
  • I got £50 for a letter to Saga once! (And I'm not exactly their target age)

Depends on whether you gave sold it as an exclusive, first right, serial right, UK/World etc etc.

Better way is to use an agent who will tout it around and advise you of best deal. You will pay them commission but will hace access to more markets.
  • There are even books you can buy (though they arent cheap) of lists of magazines/ periodicals etc with what sort of things they want, how much they pay and contact details of who to submit your work to. They are published annually to keep them up to date but are aimed at freelance photographers and writers etc.
