Hi all
Earlier tonight a plate fell out of cupboard onto our ceramic hob causing it to crack the glass. It is chipped at side and crack line across from this, thought this is not over the rings. We have building and contents insurance would it be worth claiming for it? Do they come out and look at it. Is it possible to get this fixed, does anyone know any companies in Belfast area that would do this?
Thanks

have you accidental damage cover ?
What is the excess on your insurance ?
how much will it cost to replace ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0 -
Just realised do not think I am insured for accidental damage so thats a non starter. Not sure if you can just replace the glass or if it would be just as cheap to replace the whole hob.0

Missma, you can buy new ceramic hobs for as little as £140 so i highly doubt in this age of throw away things it would be even worth fixing. As for claiming for something like this on insurance... really not worth it as a calim is a claim whether it £100 or £3000 from my experience.
Buy a new one and get a spark to fit it... probably the cheapest way all round!
Alternativly if you have a few hundred quid, go for an induction hob as by far the most economical type of hob...0 -
Thanks for replies will prob get summit reasonable in price as hopefully want to move in next couple of years. It is still working but to be honest would probably annoy me and would also be scared it would split further. thanks again0

Missma. don't use the hob, it is in a dangerous state. If a pot boils over the water will run into the crack and underneath making the pot LIVE and whoever touches it will get a shock.
Best get it replaced as soon as possible.Well....... I thought it was good!!0 -
I had my original Hotpoint ceramic hob for 16yrs and decided to change it. I purchased a Belling out of Harvey Normans for £299 in their sale. The new ones don't have any protective edging around it and the same thing happened to mine when a glass fell out of the cupboard and hit the edge of the hob cracking it. My house insurance is with direct line, covers accidental damage and has no excess payable. I rang up to make the claim and they said I would hear from a company (can't remember their name) within 24hrs but they would call at my home to verify the claim. I said ok, a few hours later this company called offering me a voucher for £140 at Argos to supply a hob i'd never heard of the manufacturer before. I refused saying my policy covered new for old and wanted the same hob that had been damaged. After 10-15 mins chat she agreed that I was entitled to a straight replacement. Another problem arose in that Harvey Normans wasn't on their supplier database, Curry's and Argos didn't do the model of hob I wanted. She then said Comet did it but I advised her we didn't have a store here in NI. I said I only wanted a cheque for £299 but she insisted that she had to send me a cheque for £425. This was to cover the Comet price and delivery. I said I didn't need this much on 3 or 4 occasions but she wouldn't listen. The funny thing is my insurance renewal only went up by £25. The downside is that the new one cracked as well when a plate slipped out of my hand. I didn't have the nerve to claim again but I got another one and took out accidental damage cover on it. Why, why, why do they not put a protective edge round the hobs or give you an opportunity to buy them??0
