Price of a complete Eye Exam

I had a complete eye exam but I think I got ripped off.
I had an OCT, Optomat and eye exam with contact lens consultation... £95.
I've been with the same optician for many years and I know were more expensive than your average but they never charged me separately for all that... I used to pay £30 and always bought contacts from them.
I was shocked really. I don't think I'll be coming back again especially after seeing how much I would have to pay online for the same contact lenses they sold me. Almost double:eek:

How much is a full eye exam normally?

Was told at specsavers eye test is £22.I had test for contact lenses in the past and was charged the eye test fee of the time.
I would not pay that amount for an eye test.

    Hi there.
I normally avoid replying to this type of question as it tends to start a huge debate! I am replying to this as an optometrist, but also as a consumer of optical services myself.

I think you actually paid a VERY fair price, because you had a service far beyond a normal eye test. OCT and Optomap are in no way a standard part of an eye test. They are very expensive and amazing pieces of equipment that can see below the upper layers of the retina-the sort of things you would usually only find in a hospital. They are very successful in picking up problems that a standard eye test could not. Very few opticians have these machines (and I am talking from experience having worked for pretty much every major multiple and a few independents, so have no axe to grind). You cannot compare the test you have to a Specsavers (or indeed any other multiple's) test as quite simply, they cannot perform those tests as they do not have that equipment.

I wish I worked where you went, because I'd dearly love an OCT and an Optomap! Frankly, you get what you pay for. Your optometrist sounds very clued up and as a fellow professional, I would be very impressed by this level of examination.
Hope that makes you feel a bit better about the cost!

    shoppingnoodles,
Since you put it that way, it doesn't sound so bad. It's just that £95 is a lot of money and over the phone I just asked for an eye test and they didn't tell me about the cost.
As I said, I've been there for years, always had eye test with the Optomat and they charged me £30. The OCT was new this time.

Hi Borderline! I have never had optomap or OCT but my usual test (including eye pressure) at D&A costs 20 pounds. They do charge on top of that (30 pounds if I remember well) if they for contacts.
    HTH!
