Advantis want me to prove to them a debts not mine

Ive had a problem with British Gas in that they had a Debt collection agency contact me regarding a debt that wasnt mine. I THOUGHT I had it dealt with but they have now passed it to Advantis Credit Ltd

I wrote to them last week explaining I had already told BG this debt was NOT mine and that I hadnt lived at the address they were quoting and to stop harassing me

Ive rec'd a letter today from them saying that in order to query this with their client they 'must acquire the appropriate documentation. Please provide documentation to show where you were residing from 19/05/2006 until 27/01/2010. Suitable documentation would be full copies of the tenancy agreements to cover the full billing period'

It then finishes by giving me a priority number to call to arrange repayment of the debt

Now even if I was so inclined to provide 'proof' I dont have any. Ive lived in my current flat since Nov 2009 and have absolutely no documentation with my old address on it. However I believe the onus is on them to prove that the debt is mine as opposed to this massive fishing exercise theyre on

Can someone help me with where I stand and how to reply

the onus is on them, send the prove it letter from the stickies at the top of the forum. Don't ever supply personal information like this to a DCA.

Oh for heavens sake....honestly. These people are complete numpties arn't they. As above, your question has already been answered, but I just wanted to express solidarity and frustration with your problem.
