Coucil Tax

New to this site so please bear with me. I have recieved a letter from the local authority saying that i owe them 6 months tax on a property i lived in 5/6 years ago. I was under the impression that it was paid via the letting agent because this was told to me ( no records im afraid). The council have passed the debt onto a bailiffs and they have been apparently trying to contact me for 5 years but i have not recieved any letters or correspondence. I spoke to the council and they have not written to me at my current address even though i pay council tax to them and have been for 5 years. I find it hard to believe that they cant trace me when they collect Council Tax from me. Hope somebody can tell me where i stand on this as its causing me quite a bit of distress with the bailiffs saying that they will attend the property. I have written to the council today to complain about this and await their response. Thanks in advance.

Probably best to just pay up, the occupier is always liable for CT unless a student. Ask for time to pay. I understand that CT never becomes statute barred.

Thanks i think iwill have to but my main gripe is it took them 5/6 years to find me. The bailiffs say they want it in 3 installments which i cant afford
