What about tickets to a footy match - if he supports a team? or theatre if into drama?
My daughter started secondary school last sept and I primed her that she would only be getting a stocking and something small as big gifts for younger children only(3 younger siblings)! ended up getting her a paperjams guitar and amp which she loves!
