Hi guys
basically i lost my wife last year to cancer so there is just me and my 2 sons who are in full time education, and i used to be on a lower tax code (married couples i think) but since april my tax code has changed to K627 C U M and my weekly income tax as nearly tripled from £25 pw to £70.40 pw (gross pay per week £237.75 with income tax of £70.40 per week)
i get child and working tax credits plus beaverement benefit aswell but was told this wouldnt be taken into acount, i know that i am on a single mans code now but didnt think it would go up that much, does it sound correct anyone?
thanks in advance

There's no such thing as a married couples allowance any more (for many years), everybody has their own personal allowance.

The standard tax code for 2011/12 is 747L, the previous year it was 647L. What was yours last year? If it has changed on your payslip that will be because HMRC have issued a P2 coding notice to your employer and you should have received it too, it details why your code has changed. If you didn't receive it (they usualy come in March) then you should query with your employer why it's changed, and if necessary contact HMRC to ask them the reason.

In fact, I've just realised that a K code means you owe them more than your personal allowance, so it's no wonder your tax has drastically increased. Based on your gross pay I don't really see how you can owe them so much so I would get onto HMRC straight away. Tax and NI on your pay would be no more than £30 on the standard tax code.
