Penny Jar!

I don't know if anyone does this but I refuse to use anything smaller than 50p to pay for something, For example if I buy something for 30p and have a 50p, 10p and 20p in my purse I use the 50p and put the smaller coins in a jar.

Am I ocd or being sensible? It adds up over time and every little helps, I think I have about £15 in my jar at the moment which I hope to use on Christmas cards etc as long as things go to plan.

I do this!!! I have a massive coffee jar under my desk at work. We have a tuck box where most things are 30p, 9 times out of ten I use a 50p or 2 twenties and pop the change in the jar- I have over a tenner in there too now, only been doing it a month :D xxx
Life is too short not to love what you do.

I'm glad I'm not just being a weirdo :rotfl:

I would save 50p but at the moment I'm on JSA so that is pushing it a bit too much but I might try it for a week or so and see if I can manage.

I've been saving my coppers for years now and never miss them .

I emptied my coin jar a few weeks ago and there was £32.00 in it .:j
    Never tell .
  • This totally works - last year I emptied my jar (that I had saved for a year) and there was £76 in there - enough to cover my fuel bill for a weeks holiday / road trip with my friends. A couple of months ago I emptied again to pay for a day trip to London and there was £35 in there! I'm a month into the new jar and can't wait to build it up again. It means that a nice trip or an unexpected cost can be paid without worrying :)
I tend to put all my change under 50p into tit at the end of every couple of days then forget about it.
    Keep going!! x

I have a demijohn and empty all my change into it regardless of size(excluding £2 coins that dont fit) on a sunday night I usually takes me about 9 months to fill up and last time I emptied it there was just shy of £500 in there.
My sister and her husband collect £2 coins refusing to spend them and they filled one of those catering sized bean tin moneyboxes with them and my sister bought herself a £2500 motorbike , new jacket and helmet with the contents.

In answer to your question if you don't miss the change then yes very sensible if you become a bit OCD about it then it will grow even quicker. i have been known to go out on a Monday morning still with last weeks change and return to the house to put it in the jar.

I don't quite do this - if I have change, I'll use it. However, I will go through my pockets each night and put all my coins into the jar, which can be anywhere from a few pence to £15+. At last count there was about £80 in there, and last count was a few months ago - I switched to a sealed jar since then, so I need to use a tin opener if I want to do a recount!

I also save my loose change.

Anything less than a £1 coin goes into a large (empty) vodka bottle (the sort you see in pubs / clubs etc) on a daily basis.

I also save £2 coins (as and when I get them) and then when I get to £10 or £20 I then either treat myself to something or make an additional payment (either a cc or overdraft or most often the kids).

So basically the only coin I use / spend is a £1 coin (lol) :D

Any kind of piggy bank saving is beter than having absolutely nothiing if things get bad so keep on filling them.

We did this and managed to save up nearly £200 which meant we could buy a bike rack for the car and bank the rest. The secret is to have the penny jar out of the way somewhere and not even think of opening it until its full!!

One of the biggest lessons I have learned on my debt free journey is that every penny really does count. I used to think, oh thats only a fiver I'll buy it - but of course if you havent got the fiver spare in the first place then this way of thinking is going to get you into real trouble.
