working for food vouchers

At present along with many families across the U.K.we are watching every penny we spend. That little bit of disposal or “walking around” money is getting smaller every month as prices rise in utilities and food.
Due to measures taken by the government everybody in the public and private sector have had pay freezes.
I would say nearly everybody shops at a Supermarket be it Tescos, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons and Lidl.
At times especially as small shops are going out of business a lot of criticism is giving to the larger retailer for taking over and then the smaller retailers cant compete. Again this makes people more determined to shop around and get the “best” price.
They all have different slogans. I have visited each of their websites, they all want to work with the community and together work as a team {the Supermarket and the community}
I have an idea, would it be possible that any one of these firms or better still all of them have system for employing staff on a casual basis, for example myself I work 4 days on and 4 days off. If I was given the chance to say work 8 hours between lets say 0600 and 2200 hours two or three times a month. You did not pay me in money but “food vouchers” . A rate of £7.50 an hours times 8 hours =£60 in food vouchers.
“Food vouchers” mean exactly that no alcohol. This then would give me extra money to do more with the family.. cinema, bowling, night out etc.
Personally I think it would mean as companies they are putting more back into the community and getting the local and the U.K. economy moving again. As companies they still are making profit as they would not be paying me the £60 in “real” terms
I understand that this may not be viable for legal reasons, which is a shame..this system everybody works together and everybody benefits
Could this be done???..just a thought i had this morning whilst chatting to my brother in law..

I doubt it would work, if I work then I want money, not vouchers.
Also, the quickest and cheapest method of paying someone is to transfer money into their bank account. Will supermarkets want the extra work and expense of paying in vouchers?
Apart from that, it's been tried before. Year ago mines, and estates etc. used to pay people in their own money. Well, just tokens that resembled coins, and these could only be spent in the company shop.
It sounded like a nice idea, if you were an employer. You paid your employees in a manner that meant they could only spend their wages in your shop. So you got the money back again.
There was also a dept store called Sheppards in Gateshead, when I was young. It had it's own money and would only give change in it's own money. So if you spent a shilling in the shop, and handed over a ten bob note you got nine bob in Sheppards money for change and you could only spend it in Sheppards.
It worked while it was the only dept store in town, but once there was more, people didn't want to be tied to that one store. They wanted proper money back in change so they would have the choice of where they could spend it.
The same would happen now, people wouldn't want to be restricted to buying food with their wages, they would want to spend it on other things too.0 -
I dont think the supermarkets are always have better deals especially on fruit/veg. Often you can find it cheaper in local greengrocer and its usually much fresher/local produce
Most of us are feeling the pinch what with wage freezers and not just public sector, fuel, energy, clothing, utilities have all shot up these are things most of us need on a daily basis
Still Cameron says we all in it together little comfit he and many of the fat pigs can afford holidays away, when most of us cant even afford a break in UK let alone abroad0
