Trying to do this for my mother - Has anyone done this?

First I tried in firefox 5 and some of the boxes you need to fill such as phone number type are non-existant

Then tried in IE9 and when I tried to go to my account to continue the form I started in firefox nothing happened

Tried to start a new form and it wouldn't let me

The browser compatibility says: http://www.dwp.gov.uk/eservice/need.asp
Operating systems and browsers

The service is not currently available using Macs or other Unix based systems even though you may be able to input information.
Our service currently works with the following operating systems and browsers:
Microsoft Windows 98:
  • Internet Explorer versions 5.0.1, 5.5 and 6.0
  • Netscape 7.2
Microsoft Windows ME
  • Internet Explorer version 5.5 and 6.0
  • Netscape 7.2
Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Internet Explorer version 5.0.1, 5.5 and 6.0
  • Netscape 7.2
  • Firefox 1.0.3
  • Mozilla 1.7.7
Microsoft Windows XP
  • Internet Explorer 6.0
  • Netscape 7.2
  • Firefox1.0.3
  • Mozilla 1.7.7
what? no mention of windows vista or windows 7
current ie version is ie9
current firefox version is ff5
netscape doesn't exist anymore
I expect very few people use windows 98 or windows me anymore

why are they blocking the vast majority of people from using the service by having requirements for such old and outdated software?

edit: just phoned for a new paper claim form as I had written rough notes on the old one - they say online claims are not possible - so the directgov website is a bit misleading

will just have to fill in the paper form then

  • I had the same problem so we used the download form which is printed out once filled in and then posted.

But don't do this for ESA as the envelope is far too small, unless you are not bothered about paying for postage.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)

Wow, that's so behind the times it's laughable  I did actually laugh at Windows ME :o

Basically, what has happened here is that the site scripting has not been updated and tested with other OS's since the inception of XP - bloody ridiculous!

  • It does actually work occasionally with windows 7. Having said that save the point where you which to continue from later and it will not load back up again.

Much easier to use the PDF version.

If anyone does remember to tick the box you press enter on your keyboard, took me a while to work that one out, but then i am away with the faeries most of the time :)

  • I ended up using the fillable pdf version - they said they would send me a new paper form after I spoiled the old one by writing rough notes in it but it didn't arrive!
