car allowance/mileage queastion

Hello,

Just a quick one for all you knowledgable types on here:

I work as a site manager in construction on PAYE with a £4000 car allowance.

Due to the nature of my work i move sites fairly frequently, i've been on 3 sites in the last 18 months.

Would i be able to claim any tax back on my journeys to and from work?

First time I have tried this, I have just started a new job and been given the opportunity to either have 300 per month car allowance or additional salary which is better for tax ? any ideas

Generally a car allowance is treated as additional salary for tax purposes, so I cannot see it would make any difference.

You cannot claim travel to your workplace as an expense against tax, so if each site in turn is your permanent workplace, the answer is "no".

If you are required to visit several sites at once, travelling between the sites, then there could well be a claim.
