ATI or nVidea ?

Lots of games promote nVidea at the beginning. Is it any better than the same characteristics Radeon?(even at least on those particullar games like Tomb Raider) or are they exactly the same and that is just a clever advertisement? I am planning on buying a PC but, can't decide which graphic card to go for.

Just get whichever is the best for your budget.
  • I find this is mostly down to personal preference.

Nvidia cards have Physix technology built in which will help with any games that use it but the ATI cards usually have more vram and are a little cheaper than the Nvidia equivalent.

As the PC is a purchase for a long period of time, there is no point of saving around £40 and going for a worse card.

So can I assume Nvidia's are better?
  • My personal preference is Nvidia, I find them a bit more stable than ATI and if you get a fairly decent card now then it will last a good few years. My current card (9800 gtx+) has been going strong for nearly 3 years and still copes with todays games very well.

my personal preference is exactly the same but with ATI (now called AMD), I've been burned pretty badly with nvidia GPUs failing and being completely unusable, so (since the performance/price is virtually identical) I go AMD over nvidia.

if nvidia ever go miles ahead of AMD then I would buy an nvidia card but right here right now they are pretty much identical, also the red black of AMD looks better in my case than the green black nvidia card :D

Just get the best you can for the budget. What is 'best' changes depending on what it costs.

No one's going to do the heavy lifting for you, you have to put some effort into this.

Choose a budget, look at what's available within that budget, then look at some benchmarks and reviews - then just get the best value for money.

There's a comparison of graphics card here that might be of interest: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-performance-radeon-geforce,review-32251.html

Recently the Radeon cards have had the best performance against cost so you would get better value from AMD and most games behave the same under either card. I'd check out some benchmarks and decide based on those and your budget which will provide the best performance for what you are willing to pay. If you can get better performance from nvidia for your money, go with them, but don't let the marketing at the start of games sway you.
