    I would like to point out the general mathematical problem on this even if you did answer C:

    a 7% reduction of £500 does not cover a 7% increase on £1000.

    Where will he get the other £35 from???

    Dear Mr Norris,

    I beg of you to review your decision.

    I've been the victim of bad advice. I had originally been told by a Mr McAche that I could buy a 2 bedroom flat for £500 a month. It was only when I saw 8% increases in my travel costs up to £540 a month, and 15% increase on my heating bills up to £240 a month, that I started to see a problem. With income of £1,000 a month, and outgoings of £1,280, I decided this leaves me very little to live on.

    In another stroke of mathematical genius, Mr McAche suggested that a 7% salary rise would cure the problem. It was only when the rise was refused by my employer, that he suggested I ask you for a 7% rent reduction. You should be thankful that I didn't request a 28% rise, otherwise no doubt Mr McAche would have suggested I request a 28% rent reduction.

    I have since been informed by my employer that he has decided to reduce my salary by 30%. Following exactly the same logic, therefore, I hereby formally request that you increase my rent by 30%.

    You have my deepest sympathies, I actually am aware of Mr McAche and his '70% club' as one of my previous tenants also followed the path you are now taking by following his bad advice. Unfortunately my sympathies cannot extend to helping you financially, as I mentioned your rent was held below the market to reflect your loyalty, but we have now had an offer 15% above your current rent. If you wish to stay on I can offer you another contract at 20% more than your current rent. Perhaps MR McAche will pay you the difference, if not once again I offer my sympathies.

    PS regarding Mr McAche lodging with you, I take this opportunity to remind you that you cannot sub let (or keep pets, especially apes).

    It is with great regret that I see you refuse to increase my rent by 30%, and will only increase it by 20%. Perhaps we can compromise by you increasing it by 25%?

    Mr McAche, as you are probably aware, has no money. He once had respectable employment with a scientist, who had an infinite number of such colleagues employed to sit at a typewriter typing total garbage. Just when the scientist's budget ran out, at which point he had hoped to see the complete works of Shakespeare, he found that he had only achieved utter tripe, drivel, and garbage. So he abandoned the experiment and let the monkeys go.

    Many of them found alternative employment, but Mr McAche preferred to join the 70% club whose members, as you know, all share the characteristic of being '30% short of the full deposit' [if you understand my meaning]. He continues, however, to perform his previous work, unpaid, and simply types the same drivel into his computer all day.

    So please understand that I am not "sub letting" the property at all. I am simply providing the wretch with free accommodation for two reasons. Partly on humanitarian grounds, but mainly because I'm a bit of a scientist myself. I don't expect anything like the complete works of Shakespeare, but I live in hopes that one day, Mr McAche will produce a single sentence that makes even an ounce of sense.

    That would be classified as a monumental achievement, and I fear that I am 'flogging a dead horse' but we must all live in hope.
