Please help! Looking for a good deal on a laptop

My dad is in hospital at the moment and one of my younger siblings (no-one will admit to it) has well and truly broke his laptop...
He has been allowed out for a few hours today to sort bills out etc and has not been able to do so.
His laptop is beyond repair so has decided to invest about £600 in a new one. It's been a while since I've done any PC/Laptop shopping myself so I don't know what's hot or not and to be honest he doesn't need anything too flash... But in true MSE style looking for a good deal/value for money.
He's looking for something with an average spec but all he uses it for is...
the internet, (general surfing and MSN), typing documents and playing solitaire (i'm not kidding!)
A quite important feature is good after-sales service... Like me, he doesn't have any knowledge or patience with technology so needs someone who will do the tough stuff for him... eg. Back to base warranty...???
If you've got this far, thanks sooooo much! :T Please help, he needs something asap and is far too ill to look for himself... all ideas are HUGELY appreciated
