It's worth going to Argos for these at the moment. For example, they are selling the Morphy Richards Jet Stream Elite Steam Generator for £75, that's half the usual price.

Prior to buying electricals, I always check what Which? has to say about the product (your local library will have free online access). They have recently done a review on steam irons (including steam generators) and rated these two to be the best buy:Philips GC6103 Provapor Azur Doublepeed and Rowenta DG7140 Pro Precision. Tefals also tend to be very good.

Also when considering purchasing a steam generator it's worth knowing what to look out for (again thanks to Which?):

    The basics

Steam generators are best suited to families or those who undertake high volumes of ironing at a time. The reason being that one of the main advantages of a steam generator is the large water tank capacity; it requires less frequent refilling but also takes longer to reach working temperature before you start.

Because the tank is separate from the iron, steam generators are easier to use for vertical ironing of curtains or clothes on the hanger, as the iron is lighter than that of a steam iron with a full water tank.

Generators also produce at a higher rate which gives quicker results. For those who prefer to iron a little at a time, steam irons are the key; they heat up fast and you can still get quality results.
    Anti-calcium

Every iron we tested included an anti-calcium feature of some description and instructions for cleaning.

Those tested will all steam with tap water but the side effect of this is that over time calcium in the water supply forms limescale which clogs the steam vents.

Cleaning systems and anti-calcium functions are designed to prevent this calcium build-up from damaging the iron.

Functions range from a changeable anti-calcium cartridge, to routinely pressing the burst of steam or dedicated anti-calcium button at the time of cleaning; forcing limescale out of the vents thus keeping your iron in good working order.
    Water

Much of the UK has relatively hard water and some manufacturers suggest using distilled water or a mix of tap and distilled water in hard water areas.

Frequent cleaning helps but in some cases we found it's important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines. If you're concerned about the life of your iron you can find out the water hardness in your area from your water supplier.
    Extra features

Aside from performance and durability there are a few extra features you may wish to consider before making your purchase.

Button notch/recess: some irons have a notch in the soleplate or a recess just above making ironing around buttons easy.

Cable tidy: For storage purposes a cable tidy, compartment or clip is useful. It will also lessen the possibility of damaging the wires if you can keep the cable kink-free.

Spray button: Aside from steaming, a directional spray incorporated into the front of the iron can be handy on stubborn creases.

Steam shot button: Most steam irons have these towards the front of the handle within thumb's reach providing an additional burst of steam at a higher vapour rate.

Auto shut-off: Some irons have a fail safe which will switch the iron off after a period of being idle; usually eight minutes idle in the upright position and 30 seconds when rested on the soleplate.

Vertical Steam: This is the ability to steam curtains or hanging clothes, but it's worth noting that for most steam irons this requires you to repeatedly press the shot of steam button.

Hope this helps. I'll shut up now :silenced:

Tchibo do one periodically for £49.99 with a 3 year warranty. Have had one for a year and am still delighted with it. Highly recommended!

You can also get 10% via quidco, and I believe there is a free delivery voucher available (check hotdeals) if you have not ordered from them before.
