Help with an old debt!

Hi all, this is my first time posting so i hope i'm doing it right, anyway i just wanted some advice, about 15 years ago when i left uni here(and the country, difficult times) i had a loan outstanding, i would imagine that this would have then gone to court? defaulted? ccj? at my old address, i never received any further correspondence, anyway after returning to this country i have been living here at different addresses for past 10 years, working, no loans, credit cards etc, but i have now been offered a job with a bank, who will do credit checks on me, will they see this old debt and refuse to hire me? i did a check with experian on my addresses for last seven years and nothing. Petrified cos i really want this job
Help!!!

    You should be fine.

The default and account will have been years ago and so will no longer show on your credit files (they are only visible for 6years from the default).
If there was a CCJ granted at any time then this also only stays on your credit files and the registery trust website for 6years from the date of the CCJ. And it is this that the bank would look at.
As its over 15years ago then even if there had ever been a CCJ its likely to be more than 6years ago.

So it shouldn't affect your job offer - and they shouldn't be able to find out the debt exists.

As an aside if anyone does ever chase you for this debt - unless they have a CCJ it would be statute barred - and if there is a CCJ from more than 6years ago then they have to go back to court to be allowed to continue to chase you for payment.

    Good luck with the job!

  • thankyou so much, i wasn't sure whether banks could check "other" records, paranoia no doubt
