statued barred debt avice

Hi everyone
I need some advice and hope you can help. About 10 years ago while at university I got into a lot of debt with various banks (mainly overdrafts), store cards, catalouges and credit cards. I did pay back a lot of what I owed but in the end it all got too much for me and i burried my head in the sand and have not communicated with any of my creditors since. Thats maybe about 6 or 7 years ago. I still get letters from all different debt collection agencys but I have not acknowledged any of these letters.
Someone recently told me that my debt would now be considered statued barred and I have a few questions about this:
1 - What would i need to do to have the debt unenforceable?
2 - If my debt is unenforceable will it stay on my credit file or be removed?
Any other advice greatly appriciated.
