I second the poster who recommended Shirley Goode's books. She sets herself a challenge and a budget and goes through a week's meals explaining what she has to buy and how to make the most of it. Each week she gets her spend lower and lower whilst still eating well. What she buys, the cost and what she makes are all clearly explained. It really is very good, although the prices are out of date now.

I like the idea of precooking the rice in that one - at the moment my standard freezer tub is a carte d'or box ( my folks seem to live on the stuff so I get a limitless supply ) I'm trying to move towards a fortnightly shop , to try and coindicde with my veg box delivery , but I think the freezer if going to fill up pretty fast. I suspect I'll be able to have a fortnight off cooking from scratch every other month !0
