Tax code muddle..

Options
Hi all,
Hope you won't mind a confusing tax code question.

I hope I can explain it clearly enough.. :o

I have had 2 jobs for almost a year now. Job 1, I started aug 2010. job 2, I started as an xmas temp in Oct 2010 and was kept on.

I was told to call the tax office to have my tax code split between the 2 as I earned just over the tax threshold between the 2 jobs. Both are part time.

I left job 1 in July and was soon offered another part time job (temp at the moment)which I started 1st August. I didn't have a P45 from Job 1 so completed a P60 at my new job.

I have just rec my wage from my new job and pay slip stated 747L M1 as my tax code which I know is an emergency tax code and I paid nothing in Tax.

I'm worried that I will end up owing tax. I called the tax office before I started my new job to tell them that I had left job 1 but the didn't seem bothered and said unless I had a P45 they couldn't change anything.

I guess that job 2 still has my old split tax code?

Do I need to do something to get this put right? I still havent had a p45 from job 1. do I need one or does it not matter now?

I hope that makes sense :rotfl:

I assume you mean that you completed a P46 when you started your new job - Did you put an "X" in box "C" on the P46 to inform your employer and HMRC that your circumstances are : "C – I have another job or receive a state or occupational pension"

From the code that your new employer has used, it seems more likely that you put an "X" in box "B" on the P46 - which was the wrong choice.

Your new job will use the emergency code until HMRC tell your new employer which code to use, then the amount of tax you pay should be adjusted by your employer so that you have paid the correct amount of tax by the end of the tax year.

However, you will need to contact HMRC to ask them to split your tax codes in the same way as they did for your previous employment, you need to contact HMRC immediately.

If this is the case then your employer has used the wrong code so you need to sort it out with them.

I did finish that comment with a :rotfl: Please take it in the way it was intended.

Unfortunately, when I call I am made to feel stupid and the people I haven spoken with have been unhelpful hence my reasons for posting my question here rather than calling! As HMRC is not somewhere you call often those impressions tend to last! Obviously it's nothing against you personally.
