Deep Scale and Polish...

Hi

I've had lots of scale and polishes over the years. However just got back from the dentist ( never been with this dentist before) who has informed me I have bone damage and will need a 'deep' scale and polish.

This involves numbing the whole mouth area because he is going under the gum line.

Always attended six monthly checkups with a normal scale and polish.I find them uncomfortable but bearable without any pain relief.

I'm concerned about the whole of my mouth area being numbed all over. Never heard of this before.

He has also recommended a Water Pik.

Advice and thoughts needed please. Thanks.

If you need it it should be done. You can ask to try without anaesthetic and see how you go. If you have deep pockets and bone loss then you have to have roots cleaned and more importantly change the way you clean to stop damage getting worse.

Perhaps it's just the magic cream? Just don't fancy having all my mouth numb if it's the needle.

He intends taking X-Rays during the next appointment to show me.

It sounds as though my hygiene is really bad, but it's not!

    Thanks for your reply.

Edit: Just been doing a search. I think I will buy some disclosing tabs tomorrow and step up the brushing. In fact I will use the electric brush am and manual pm combined with more flossing.
  • Last time I was at the dentist she said she was going to do a deep scale and polish . I didn't realise there were different types (I'm 50+ ) she offered to numb my mouth but I said to try without . She did + it was a bit more uncomfortable but not too bad . I hate needles in my mouth .

I had to have root planing as had severe gum disease. Am only 34 and don't smoke and my teeth look immaculate, but the damage is below the surface. Some people have a more alkaline mouth and that means that the bacteria that causes peridontal disease thrives. I've always kept my mouth clean and only have one filling.
Having said that, most people think their hygiene is sufficient and it's usually not.
I always used an electrical toothbrush and thought that was enough. Turns out I wasn't flossing properly and I now brush, then floss, then use interdental brushes, then a separate smaller brush for back teeth.

I had 12 injections in one side and about 8 in the other side a week later! Not nice, but better than losing my teeth :)

Thanks to the peeps that have replied.I feel a bit easier about it now.

I'm thinking of purchasing one of these when I can afford it!:

    Aren't disclosing tabs expensive?

Can't comment on the Rio irrigator, but I have this one and it's brilliant!

Don't buy the Waterpik which is on sale in Boots and Amazon, as the battery doesn't hold a charge after about 8-9 months. Both my friend and myself bought them, and they both packed up around the same time. We got our money back and bought the Panasonic, which although it is dearer, is much better, and very efficient. Lots of bad reviews on Amazon on the Waterpik, all saying the same.
