Where can I download (as a rent) movies online?

In the US I used to be a member of a online movie rental club. The way it worked was that I paid a cheap monthly subscription and then was able to download movies and watch them right away!
I had tried the services who deliver DVDs in your mailbox, but it did not help with those moments when I just felt like watching a movie our of the blue. The download itself was not a real download because it did not stay in your machine or took a long time -- it was more like "streaming media"
I am wondering if there is a similar service here in the UK. Which one would you recomment?

the only one i know to offer downloads to rent is lovefilm but their CS is not good at all and I don't know if you can rent downloads only or you also have to be able to rent their DVDs.
