Help! Emergency Tax

Hi, I hope I've posted this in the correct place? I just wanted to know how long I'm going to be kept on emergency tax? I'm now in my 8th week at work in my new job and I'm still on an emergency tax code. Does it vary or is there a set time that one will be kept on it? Thanks!

Ask your payroll person for a P46. This should sort you out in the absence of a P45.

How long ago did you give them your P45, or complete a P46? You will be kept on it until such time you provide them the relevant information to take you off it, it won't happen by magic

What tax code and basis are you on at the moment? Many people refer to the code BR (you pay 20% of everything) as emergency tax; but it is not, it the tax code used if your employer has not had the correct forms filled in to use emergency tax.

The emergency tax code is at the moment 747L and can be applied on a cumulative basis if you have advised your employer on a P46 that this is your first taxable income this tax year, or on a non-cumulative basis if you advised your employer that you had taxable income before this job.

To give some idea of what is happening to your tax you need to advise the code being used at the moment as above, also what you did before this job, if you have a P45, if so the details on it, if not have you filled in a P46, if so what section you selected A B or C.
