How long do defaults stay on record

I have read a lot of posts that say defaults only affect your credit rating for 6 years from the date you first defaulted?

So if i first defaulted in 2008 and cleared the account today it would be off in 2014?

I have been on equifax that says at the bottom:

How long is this data kept on my Credit Report?
The information will stay on your Credit Report for 6 years from the date the account was ended.

Which is correct?

6 years from the default date if the account has defaulted. Or 6years from the settlement date is its never defaulted.

for this purpose the account ends when you default

or when you settle if you never defaulted

a bit confusing to phrase it that way though
