Basic accounts after BC who to approach?

Hi there
After much stressing over a failing marriage and panicking about going BC I have decided that this staying in an unhappy relationship just because of the IVA isn't healthy.
My one biggest worry though is who will give ma a basic account. I have debts with Nationwide an O/D on a flex account.
We jointly had a credit card with Co-Op. And I had a Barclaycard debt!!
Those 3 seem to be the only banks listed who give basic accounts to undischarged bankcrupts!
Surely they will turn me down if i have a history of debt with them???

If anyone can advise me as am really scared I have 2 small children one of whom is disabled and I rely heavily on carers benefit and DLA for my daughter, and if i cant have an account we'll really struggle.

Many thanks.

  • It's worth giving citibank.co.uk a try. They give Visa Debit cards (however, no overdraft or cheque guarantee facility) to pretty much anyone with adverse credit history. I know a lot of people on this forum with IVA's and DMP's have their current account.

Failing that, most places will do a Basic Cardcash account type thing, where you can have salary paid in and standing orders set up. NatWest also do a Step account, where you receive a Solo debit card, online and tele banking
    £2 Coin Savings = £0.23:confused:
  • Halifax are really good. I got a basic bank account with them (they dont credit score you for it or anything) You also get a visa electron so can use it in shops etc.
If my memories correct you have to go into your local branch and they give you some forms to fill in and they send them onto the halifax head office.

I was told by somone (cant remeber who) that banks have to provide you with at least a basic bank account. (not sure if this is true someone else on here may be able to confirm this)

  • oh and with halifax you get your internet and telephone banking too.

Sorry about your situation - cann't help much but I have one suggestion and I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you better:

See if this account is suitable to get you going (you mention DLA etc):

Can someone more familiar with this type of account help OP?

Try not to be scared, someone will help here and perhaps if you have a good friend maybe chat it over with them.

    Good luck
