Old Style Household

Options
Being new to this board I've had a flick through as many posts as I can but cant find what I really need.
I'm looking for alternatives to household cleaners and such but there seems to be so many threads on them I'm getting all confused (it doesn't take much!!).

Can I be really cheeky? If I put down a list of all the jobs that need doing can someone post a solution that is tried and tested. Just the one for each job. I cant be the only one that would love to have that!!

I found one today for doing the tile grout, using a trainer whitener, and it works a treat, I've already done my bathroom and kitchen and its made a huge difference I want it for the rest of the house now!!

Then people can add other jobs that they need solutions for as well and maybe a new sticky thing can be compiled of the list.

Is this do-able?

I can't see a reason why not. Might get a various amount of views on what products for each job of course. Sounds like a great idea.
One day I might be more organised...........

There are ideas on how to use some of the natural products that I've read about on this board, eg: White Vinegar.

Martin's new "Old style" book is full of tips for cleaning and what to use etc.

That's OK, I've only skipped through it too so far but spotted a lot of "Kim and Aggie" type cleaning tips.

    Welcome!

Have you tried the mega indexed thread? You'll find vinegar and bicarb feature heavily in the cleaning section!

We used to have a "sticky" called "Save Zillions on Cleaning" aka The Cleaning Recipe Thread. It's a very comprehensive listing.

When squeaky became a Board Guide, he spent many long hours indexing all the posts so that they were easier to find and developed The Indexed Collection and also The Mega Index

As there is a limit to how many "sticky's" can be placed on the front page, he also set up a sticky Welcome to Old Style (read me first)

We all have our own favourite/preferred methods/OS cleaners so it would be impossible to compile a list of just one method per job. For example, for laundry, I prefer HM washing powder, but another OS'er might prefer HM laundry gloop and yet another might prefer Tesco own brand with an extra boost from a Tbsp of soda crystals. As you can imagine, it is a very personal thing :D

Hopefully you will find a wealth of information that has been garnered over time that you can apply to your own particular cleaning tasks and suits your particular circumstances. :D

  • Nick and Queenie, I'll have a look through them indexed thingys later, thanks.

Clu, there was a post on this forum somewhere that suggested using normal trainer whitener (the stuff the help fix scuffs on white trainers, my brand is kiwi but I think others do it, you'll find it with the shoe polishes) to re-whiten the grout between tiles. It is fantastic and has made both the tiles round my shower and the downstairs loo look like new. I started off using cotton buds to get it on the grout only but soon gave up and just put it on using the sponge applicator it has attached to it and going round with a cloth after to wipe off excess.
I just need to find something that will do the seal round the bath now as well!!!

The seal may need replacing as I haven't found anything that would successfully "renew" it's lustre :(
