I've been blogging for a short while but I wanted to blog on beauty and I wanted to recommend products that I had tried and tested I was wondering if anyone knew the rules on this? Would I be able to link to a site in which I purchased the products from? I would not be gaining anything from linking to their website I just wanted to make it easier for people to find the products.

its ok to link unless you are using affilliate links , some companies have strict rules on the use of the company name

Of course you can. Most bloggers DO try to gain something from doing this, by earning referrals for example. When you link to another site, it gives that site relevance and authority and most welcome links.
The big no-no is having a trademark in your domain name; companies tend not to like this and you might be asked to take your site down. So you could have a site 'beautyproductsilike' but not 'lorealproductsilike'.
It's different on a forum like this one as your link might not be welcomed by MSE, but if it is your own blog go for it.
