I mentioned a book in another post sloe gin and beeswax by jane newdick. I think it is quite interesting. Anyhow a couple of recipies out of it.
lemon and honey cough mixture
two juicy lemons
150mls clear honey
50ml glycerine
squeeze the juice from the two lemons and streain the juice, Mix all ingrediants together and put into a small clean medicine bottle and cork tightly.
cinnamon cough sweets
rosewater
powdered gum arabic
powdered cinnamon
caster sugar.
gently warm about 2 tbsp of rosewater and add enough gum arabix approx 2 tsps to make a thick syrup. Now work in roughtly equal amount of caster sugar and powdered cinnamon until you have a solid paste. Press into a shallow tin and as it dries cut into small sticks. Roll these slightly to make them round. Dry completely.
(I know that cinnamon is supposed to be very beneficial and was used a lot years ago in the diet, it does go off so personally I'd get some fresh or use some that has been recently opened if I was going to the trouble.)
I thought the idea of making own cold remedies was interesting becasue we can use fresh ingrediants. I've heard that elderberry has lots of benefits as well. (also will make you very sick if not cooked etc) So I'm hunting out some more recipies from different books at the moment.

my grancher swore by hot cider! just heat a mug of cider in a saucepan (or the microwave) until really hot (you can add a cinnamon stick if you wish) I like to use very dry cider then sweeten with a little honey - dont ask me why.........it just tastes better to me than sweet cider heated up!
my remedy is hot honey and lemon - just cut a thick slice of lemon (or a tablespoon of juice) add a tablespoon of honey and top up the mug with boiling water. Stir, and leave to cool a little until drinkable. this is great for coughs too!
you can add flavourings to the honey and lemon.......the warming ones being the most beneficial. Cloves, Ginger, Cinnamon being the most common ones used. depends on your personal preference!0 -
Sorry ladies, this is deemed as medical advice so I have to close it. Also can we please remember the copyright rules and use excerpts or links?
