cleaning chip pan

Has anyone got any tips on cleaning a stainless steel chip pan that has got really greasy and grotty looking please. The electric bit does come off so I could soak the main bowl and basket. I've had a look in the Mega Index and the wonderful Thrifty ways book but couldn't see anything.

Try a strong solution of soda crystals made up with boiling water (one cupful to one pint), and soak the pan in that for as long as it takes. If the grease is really bad you could try soaking it overnight.
Please note however that this is NOT suitable for aluminium

Thanks Jayar, I'll try that tonight although I'll have to find something to pour the oil into first. I'll let you know how I get on.

Vinegar can work well also. Several bin liners into the bin inside each other then straight in the dustbin I used to do, but haven't got a chip pan now :)

I tried soaking it in soda crystals and hot water last night, but I didn't have enough for a strong solution so I threw in some bio washing powder as well. Some of the wost bits needed a bit of scrubbing this morning but it's sparkling, looks like new. Thanks for the advice.

    Weyhey well done
We used to have a deep fat fryer, but I chucked it because I could never keep it clean. I now use a chip pan (about twice a year heehee) and, compared to the fryer, it's a doddle to clean.
