setback - need a hug!

Hi folks,

Well I have had a couple of stressful days at work. To cut a very long story short I have been covering a maternity leave at work for the past 6 months, and I was told on wed that they have been overpaying me from the start (which is why I didn't know) and they only spotted THEIR mistake before Christmas. So anyway, they said I could pay it all back a bit each month out of my pay packet, but I am going to do it by paying work on my 0% CC and then I can pay the card back at my pace. I have spent the last day trying to find out exactly how much I owe. They were not able to tell me, so I eventually worked it out at about £1400:eek:
However, to add insult to injury I have to pay it back including tax, then I will get the tax back at the end of Feb. So in fact on I have to pay back £1833.32:eek: I do not know exactly how much I will eventually get back as a tax rebate.

I had just got my CC paid off and was chewing through my debts nicely. I know I am not more in debt, and fair enough it is not my money so it needs to go back, but it is a real shock and I am really upset!

Give it a couple of days and I will get over it, and will get used to the idea that my debt free journey is going to be a bit longer that I was hoping for:eek:

I have changed my sig but have no idea what my new debt free date might be!

thanks for listening

I suggest you ask about this on the job hunting & benefits board.

IIRC I believe that if you have been overpaid and you can prove it will put you in financial hardship to pay it back then you dont have to do so.

I am talking off the top of head here and Im not 100%, so do check this out!

would it not be easier to just let them deduct it at source each month then the tax aspect would be sorted automatically by them wouldn't it?
just a thought, I had to wait ages once for a tax refund.

I think your work should not be charging you interest anyway, so not sure why using the 0% CC is a good idea. As has been suggested, if you pay it back via payroll, it will sort the tax out too so you should only pay out £1400. Make sure they confirm the amount, and their calculations in writing before you agree to anything!

Thanks everyone, I feel better already! Well the logic behind paying it off using my CC is that if I did it a bit at a time out of my pay packet I would have to decide on a set amount to pay each month, and could only reliably manage about £100 each month. That means I would be in debt to my work for over a year! I really could not cope with this - I would rarther be able to throw odd bits of money at the CC when I can and so pay it off quicker - I wouldn't be able to pay off the odd £0.63 here and there in true DFW style otherwise! Thanks to this site I have a 0% deat until Aug this year and now feel confident enough to find other 0% deals if I have not cleared the card by then.
Work have been very good - they did say I can pay it off over whatever time scale I like, it is more just for my sanity I want to do it this way. Also, the thought of going to work for the next year knowing I am working to pay them back is too depressing - it is not quite so bad paying a faceless CC company especially when it is interest free!
Various people have told me to get in touch with my union, but to be honest I don't want things to get too heavy. I was paid too much, they have apologised and asked for the money back in whatever way I can pay it, and I just have to do so. It is not my money so I know it needs to go back. The tax thing is a bit of a pain and I am going to complain about that as it feels very cheeky, but I will get it back at some point!

Oh well, it could be a lot worse and at the end of the day it is only money.

Thanks again everyone you are all lovely for taking the time to reply and help cheer me up!
