hi,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but you are all so helpful and knowledgeable!
I usually buy fresh mushrooms, but sometimes I dont use them all and they get wasted, so I'm wondering if tinned mushrooms are as nice in dishes such as spag bol, chilli, shepherds pie etc as fresh mushrooms?
Thanks!!

Well personally - if I get a lot of mushrooms - then I use the ones I want immediately and saute up the rest in a little bit of butter and stash them in the freezer.
I've certainly found that sauted frozen mushrooms can perfectly well be used subsequently in something like a casserole.
I have a stash in there right now - awaiting use.0 -
Tinned mushrooms will be OK used as you suggest but they will be a bit different to fresh ones, especially re texture. I do what Ceridwen advised - saute and freeze them in portion sized packs then just add them frozen to sauces, stews, etc."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

I don't even saute them I just peel and quarter and open freeze on a tray and once frozen just bag up.great in soups ,stews and sheps pies or spag bol.brilliant if you see a good sized box reduced as well0

I agree with JackieO. If I see any on offer, i just slice them and freeze them. Better than tinned ones which are rubbery. BTW, if you really want, they do bags of frozen mushrooms in Asda which work out cheaper than fresh. I now just buy mushrooms when they are reduced and freeze.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

I store fresh mushrooms in either a paper bag or in a bowl lined with kitchen roll (use enough to be able to fold it over the top) and find they keep for up to a week this way in the fridge without any problems. Never keep them in the plastic box and cling film as the moisture spoils them very quickly. The chestnut mushrooms seems to keep better/longer, so their extra cost is offset by having no wastage. Lightly sauteed mushrooms keep for a day or so in the fridge, or you can freeze them. There are often bags of frozen mushrooms on offer and they are very useful to have in stock. Tinned mushrooms are a good standby to have in the larder for use during the bad weather when it can be difficult to get out to the shops.#Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain #We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us #If you focus on what you have left behind, you will never see what lies ahead - Gusteau/RatatouilleGC 2022: £0/£2,500 total spend0

Yep,I use these along with frozen sliced peppers in my cooking, being a singly I often find these work our cheaper than a fresh pepper.I mean it's what,89p for a single red pepper (approx) when a bag of frozen mixed peppers from Iceland's just over a quid.0 -
spike shame you missed the peppers when they were on offer in Aldi the week before last - a 3 pack was 69p and I took advantage and bought 10 packs sliced them then froze them - I do this with mushrooms and runner beans as well because I find that blanching alters the taste too much and I have never had any problems.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
