It must be an awful situation to be in but you are still young and I am assuming single so therefore pretty mobile workwise and life style. Although London must be a tough place to leave and even tougher to try and rejoin later in life, have you thought of looking further afield workwise. Striking out somewhere new for a few years to find better paid work and a cheaper lifestyle? I appreciate you will have friends and family where you are but you seem pretty level headed, have realised you are struggling and may consider looking at a bigger picture and long term solution.

What work are you in? Is there a possibility of promotion, more hours etc. That is such a low wage where I live let alone in London.

Wish you all the very best of luck whatever you choose to do.
  • Your telephone/internet seems quite high. Are you locked into plans with that or could you shop around for something cheaper.

It is a lot of rent for a single person, if you could find someone to share with your rent and utilities would be halved. Could you move back in with parents?

Something needs to change as a -£13 figure is only going to steadily get you more into debt.

Do I need it? Can I afford it? Is it cheaper elsewhere?
  • I reiterate the don't put it a credit card opinion from bitter personal experience. I was in the sane situation as yourself at 21 and that's exactly what I did. I am 40 and still not quite free of debt! I actually ended up with two cards and the whole thing snowballed. I'm now getting closer than ever before to being debt-free. But it has been a long hard road. Really wish I'd had MSE Forum back then... Best of luck!

I agree with the no credit card - I got a loan to pay off my credit card and over draft, then I ended up with a loan, a credit card and an overdraft, so I effectively just doubled my debt! I wish I knew then what I do now.

Do you really need a landline? This seems quite high to me, and I spend no more than £10 per month on PAYG for my mobile (Tesco have a great offer where they triple your credit, so when I top up £10, they give me £20 free credit).

Are you in a position to ask for a pay rise at work maybe?
  • I also need to clear an OD and am wondering how the heck I am going to manage it, so watching this with interest. Sorry to sorta hijack it, but is it ok to leave an account with an OD and not have a high income going into it then? I am clueless when it comes to banking I have to admit
