credit score issues...

Options
My partner is having trouble with her credit rating and she doesnt know what to do.

It all started when her mobile phone contract was up, she found a better deal so decided to move, she finished the contract with o2 and popped into Orange to get a new phone...

They said there was a problem with her credit score and rejected her.

They invited her to try again at her old (parents) address, again it was rejected... at this point they said get in touch with Experian and find out the problem.

We did this and there was no issues, so we popped into Orange and tried again.

Again, it was rejected. We tried in my name and we got accepted. Which is very strange considering i have been in debt before and probably have a rubbish credit rating.

So we phoned Experian again and and said it was something on their file that was blocking her. They suggested getting a credit card and spending £10/month - always paying it - to boost rating quickly.

She applied for a card and has been rejected again..

So what can she do now? She's worried because we are planning to apply for a mortgage.

She has credit on a laptop that she has been paying 3 years and has never missed a payment. The only other debt she has had is her previous phone contract, which latest 4 years and never missed a single payment.

No one can give us any further info so we are stuck.

Anything we can do?

What i would advise would be to get her to sign up to the free trials on experian and equifax and check both for signs. You will be able to do so free, so long as you cancel before the trial period runs out.

Also don't apply again until you have checked her credit report and sorted out any issues. A lot of searches in a short space of time can reduce your credit worthiness.

If she doesn't have much/any credit history then that may explain why she was rejected if she applied for a prime credit card. Providing there are no other issues with her credit reports ( for example defaults, CCJs) then it may be a good idea for her to try for a credit card with the bank which has her current account; maybe go into branch and see if her internal history has allowed her to be pre-approved for any of their credit cards (although give it a few months as too many searches are negatives on credit reports).

Check her credit report. She may have been a victim of ID fraud and had someone else take out a loan in her name.
