Help overpayment leads me to over £3000 debt

I have just received a letter from my employer stating I have been overpaid for sickness accrued last year.

I had been off sick for 74 days previous to my long term sickness of 5.5 months in one year.

I have reduced my hours of work from August due to my illness and have now received a letter stating that finance have made a mistake and overpaid me by £3042.39 apparantly. I am entitled to 6 months at full pay and then 6 months at half pay so this seems a lot!

Am I obliged to pay it back and at what terms as I still have a house to run and kids to bring up!

I would appreciate any help at all as I do not want this to be the start of a catastrophic new year!!!

You are required to pay it back. You may ask the employer for a monthly payment scheme and deduct it from your future wages.

    Hi sensis

I think you should perhaps book an appointment with your HR dept or payroll dept - ask your supervisor/manager who would be the best to see.

You ARE obliged to pay any overpaid wages back, but you are also entitled to know how they have calculated this overpayment in order to be satisfied that they are claiming the correct amount. Then you need to negotiate with them an amount that you can pay back each pay period (week/month).

The amount may be as big as it because your earlier extended sick leave has affected your rights to pay/half-pay - that is why you need an explanation of how the amount has been arrived at so that you can understand it.

I don't know who you work for, nor do I need to, but if you work for the NHS I may be able to help further.

Thanks for the advice both of you its a great help. At least I know I have to pay it back but agree re payment terms. I do work for the NHS lizzyb but feel they may have miscalculated my repayment. so will do as you suggest and any further help is much appreciated.

OK sensis will PM you if I can and give you further info (I thought it was the NHS because of the 6 months thing)
