I'm sorry, i have another question. We are going on holiday soon in a travel lodge so i will need to take some bread and margarine/butter for my dd to eat for breakfast and a sandwich at lunch time.

My question is: I am using 'Pure Sunflower' diary free marg at the moment...does anyone know if it will be ok for 5 days without being kept in the fridge?

I'm really interested in how people get on when they are lactose / diary intolerant when they go on holiday? This is so new to us and i've got to say i'm really worrying about eating out on this holiday.

Is there any way you could let the staff know that's what's wrong and whether they mind letting you store some dairy-free substitutes in the chillers? Also, Alpro soya yogurts are really good and don't need storing in the fridge (I pretty much live off these). Also, goat's milk is also lactose free but has calcium content comparable to cow's milk - it;s really nice and can be used for ANYTHING. You can get UHT soya milk so that should cover the milk problem.....Also...maybe a cool-bag with the ice blocks in could keep it cool for a while if it's not opened regularly

Just wishing you all the best with the new regime with your DD. Keep a diary of everything she eats, how she is that day (& next) and see how it goes.

Once she's "stable", try introducing one product for a period of time and seeing if there's any effect.

I am lactose intolerant, wheat intolerant and also have Crohn's disease:( (also various allergies).

I cannot drink "normal" milk at all but, like Ascot, find the Lactofree products fantastic. Al Elfen says, goats milk is also really nice and makes up for some of the lost calcium.

I can have an occasional wee bit of cheese or a yogurt but maybe once a week as a treat, certainly not every day.

As others have said, lactose creeps up in the strangest places so you do need to check everything (it's even in the medication that I take for my Crohn's!).

Re eating out - I don't, it's just not worth it. However, when you're on hols, you'd need to find somewhere where the food is cooked on site and you can ask for certain things to be removed if necessary.

For the items you're taking with you, I'm sure TL will be able to come up with something if you give the manager a phone and speak to them. (Lactofree do a long life version - that would probably travel better with you).

If you go back to your Dr armed with the evidence that she has been so much better with no dairy, they should be able to refer you /DD for lactose intolerance testing.

    Good luck

I found out today, don't take a lactase tablet when having ice cream. This did not work for me.

I suspect the ice cream makes the environment too cold for the lactase to work. Anyways I had to find a loo fairly quickly after having some ice cream.

I suspect the only way to have ice cream is to have it made from lactose free cream and milk (depending on the recipe).

    Thanks for that lr1277.

We have now been refered to hosp with my dd2 so we just need to wait for an appointment. My dd had 'tummy ache' again yesterday so i scrutinised her food diary. A couple of days ago she really fancied egg fried rice from the chinese. We asked the chinese and they said it just had oil rice egg and soya sauce in so we thought it was ok. After spending hours checking every ingredient she has eaten i have now found out that soya sauce has 'caramel' in which can have milk in (caramel wasn't on my list of ingredients to avoid)...it's a mine field, i wish someone could just give us one single list of all ingredients that contain milk so we can completely avoid it. I know it's not life threatening but i do hate to see my 11 year old hurting.

I am gluten intolerant but also intolerant to milk.
I can eat cheese and other dairy products but milk is a no go for me unless I use Biocare liquid lactase enzymes (as mentioned above).
I haven't had as much experience with the lactase enzyme capsules but they could be a good one for the holiday just in case for when eating out.

I also have a problem with eggs - I do have them occasionally but they always seem to give me a reaction when I do so I mostly avoid eggs.
You could try testing her with an egg in a week or so and see if she reacts.

For the holiday you could try her on sandwiches made without any kind of butter - I haven't used butter of any kind in sandwiches for years as I find I don't need it to make my 'gluten free' sarnie nice.

I hope you get a diagnosis but I'm a firm believer that if you don't the simple fact that she is feeling so much better having cut out the food which causes the problem is enough for me to go finding other ways of getting those nutrients she needs into her.

  • My OH has had tummy troubles for many years until I put him on a Dairy free diet. This seems to have worked, although I'd like to get him to a GP to get tested....that is another matter.

We don't go out much so eating out hasn't come up too often, but on the odd occassion when I can't be bothered cooking I used to buy a ready meal. What I've found is that dairy hides in all sorts of places. My latest one was Flavoured Couscous - OMG I have never added dairy to my coucous.

I have had to very Old style for his needs, things cooked from scratch and trying out unusual stuff. We now almost exclusively have unsweetened Soya milk in the house. Even my 11 year old finds it fine in her tea and her cereal. The cats are still happy to finish off any left over white sauce and you should have seen them go nuts over the rice pudding I made.

I substitute soya milk for cows milk, use vitalite for cokking and baking rather than ordinary marg. For lasagne and the like I make a white sauce flavoured with stock, paprika and mustard instead of cheese sauce.

My next endevours will be ice cream , based on a soya milk and pureed nuts (should be interesting) and home made fudge. Now if I can only find a good sourse of vegan cheese that melts I can make his all time favourite Pizza.

Shop bought treats Ginger nuts, ruffle bars, turkish delight and Oaties.

    Good luck with your DD.
