Does anybody on here do that? I mean people that have work based in, for example, the City but whos home is actually in, say, Dorset. I'm just wondering what sort of costs they incur relating to the Monday to Thursday accomodation and travelling back home on Friday evening and back again Monday morning.

I have done it in the past, living in outer London but working for a client in Bristol.
In terms of cost, I just rented a room in a house share which was about £275 per month inc of bills and just drove in and out so incurred petrol cost for the mileage.
Doing it in reverse would mean the rental costs would be higher but then again your home costs would be lower. You can get Monday-Friday only lettings but ones I've had were full week and I just didnt use it at the weekend.0 -
I did it for 4 years, working in Edinburgh during the week and spending the weekends in the Highlands. I sold the house that I lived in previously and used the money to buy a studio flat in Edinburgh and a house (smaller than the previous one) in the Highlands. Mortgage costs were about the same as before but I had to pay two lots of Council Tax, bills and insurance plus the cost of travel between the two. However, for me those costs were offset by the profit I made when I sold the flat and moved full time to the Highlands, which obviously wouldn't have been the case if I'd have been renting.0
