Tall 'larder' or 'Chest' freezer?

Hi all you helpfull people! :hello:

I was just wanting everyones opinion about the tall larder freezers and chest freezers. I am moving house shortly and have room for either in my new house. I am moving to Wales and will be miles from the shops so will need plenty of freezer space.

Many thanks

I'm in the middle of nowhere too. :) I have a chest freezer and much prefer it over my old larder one. I am wary of power cuts though so am looking at other ways to preserve food. There just seems to be more room in the chest, not sure if that's really the case though.

  • I like my chest freezer, but the small upright freezer i also have has the drawers taken out so there are just shelves in it - seems to make more use of the freezer capacity and i find it easier to organise. the chest freezer has bigger bulky stuff in it.
iwhen both give up on me i think id get a tall upright freezer and just take the baskets out and use the shelves - the chest freezer i find difficult to get stuff out of the bottom when my back is playing me up.

I think there's more room in a chest freezer because you can fill all the gaps easier than you can in drawers!

What a great idea, but do things not get frozen stuck to the metal bits?

I personally prefer chest freezers but that's because I like to put things into square cartons and stack them.

However importantly, where (just roughly) are you moving in Wales? You lucky, lucky thing. *hides Welsh flag, tattoos and air of general patriotism* Great place is North Wales, speaking completely without bias. :p

I`ve had both types over the years and i still hugely miss my tall upright freezer with shelves :o

I have a huge fridge freezer in the kitchen now but due to not having enough freezer space in it i also have a small chest freezer in the corner of a spare room upstairs, i`m forever losing things in the chest freezer or finding that what i need is right at the bottom, the old tall upright freezer was brilliant and it was very organised. If i had the choice i would go back to having one but in this house its not an option as there is no space for one.

The tall one had 3 pull out boxes and 3 pull down flaps so half of it was used as shelves for stacking anyway so really i had the best of both worlds.

larder for me everytime - I remember the horror of freezer diving to retreive long forgotten things from the bottom of my mums chest freezer! If onyl I could persuade hubby we NEED another freezer

Ooooh, very lovely. That be quite rural mind! Even my Snowdonia hide out looks a bit urban in comparison :rotfl:

Depends on finances and space but, in your situation, I would have a small upright for the regularly used things and a big chest freezer so that you can buy in bulk and be self-sufficient when the weather's bad or you're not well. You can also fill it with cheap or free stuff that you will probably get neighbours offering you - if our experience of country living is anything to go by!
