  • Hi, yes you can make chunky broth type soups in a pan and without a blender. If you want to make smooth blended soups (like carrot and corainder, cream of tomato etc) a stick blender is in my opinion, easier to use than a liquidiser. (less washing out too, just run the attachment under the tap after you have blended the soup in the pan).
I have a braun stick blender, which is still going strong after about three years of regular use, similar to this one which is just over a tenner -

May well be worth investing if you enjoy soups, and only the price of 5 cartons of covent garden soup at £2 each! I use mine a lot, for example, this week I made a big pot of carrot and coriander soup, total cost about 50p, made 4 generous servings. (bag of carrots, 1 onion, couple of cloves garlic and some dried cumin and coriander, plus hot water and a stick cube) Only took about 5 minutes to prepare the veg, cook till tender, then blitz! easy!

I have to agree with unixgirl. I still use the old fashioned method of hoiking (is that a word?) out all the chunks of veg and mashing them. If this method doesn't get it smooth enough you could always shove it through a fine sieve.

Tesco sell a basic stick blender for a fiver (or just less) I keep one just for soup because I always deform the end using it in the pan when it's too hot LOL.

If you want a really good blender Tescos have £10 off the Braun Multi in my local store making it just under £20. I've had one for 8 years and it's still going strong plus it chops and whisks too :)

I know someone who uses a potato masher when making veg soups rather than a blender.
One day I might be more organised...........
