Just one week late and you got a summons??
That's unbelievable! What sort of Council are you with?!

I have sometimes been up to a week paying, and our council have never bothered. My daughter, who is with a neighbouring council is sometimes 2 weeks late with hers and nothing is said.

It is worth giving them a call. I had the same experience with my council earlier this year, and they removed the charge from my account when I phoned them. I don't know if I was just lucky with the person I spoke to but, I got the impression they really just wanted the tax bill paid and weren't interested in making more money from these charges.

My council seem to send a reminder letter if you are late with one payment. If you are late again, they don't bother with the letter and go straight to the summons but I think after 2 weeks, not 1.

For the council not to have issued a reminder then you must already have had a 1st and 2nd reminder (sometimes a final notice as well). At most you get 3 chances before a summon is issued, make a 4th instalment (in some cases a 3rd instalment) late and the legislation allows a council to issue a summons without further notice.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

No reminders, April, may and June paid on time, July a week late but never received a reminder prior to paying, or after it was paid, August 11th received summons, checked total and it was for the remaining 6 months CT plus £65 costs.
