Self assessment

Options
Sorry if this is wrong place..

I recently registered as self-employed for this tax year, 2011-2012, so was expecting to have to do a return in Jan 2013. However, I've just received a self assessment form for the previous tax year, despite the fact I was PAYE then. I'm guessing it's a mistake due to me recently registering for this year - but wonder if they'll still make me do a submission any way.

I'll give them a call later, but does anyone know?

If they have sent you a Notice to submit a tax return for 2010-11, then yes you'll get a £100 fine in January 2012 if you don't submit one. If you go through the process of registering online, you can look at your tax returns by year. If, under "Select tax year" there is a date in the "Issued on" box for 2010-11, then in their eyes HMRC have issued you with a request for a return whether or not you've received it. If they have, though, it sounds like a mistake.

Thought that might be the case, eejits. Yes it's definitely a mistake, can't see any reason why I'd get a form now for last year - I was PAYE (and on maternity leave) until end of March, then made redundant. I registered as self employed (it's very very small scale, btu still necessary I know) about 1 month ago, got my ref no through about a week ago and then self assessment form today. How irritating and a waste of time too!

Unfortunately, as Chris says, HMRC's view is once they've issue a return it MUST be completed.

However, their online system is actually very user friendly and you will simply have to copy the details from your P60 (plus any bank interest or other income) onto the system and press submit.

You will need to register first, wait a week or so for the password to come through the post, then you will be able to go into your account and submit the return.

    Good luck!
